Marovo Island, New Georgia Island is the largest saltwater lagoon in the world. Situated in the western province, the double barrier lagoon is nominated for World Heritage Listing. The most feared of the islands was Roviana. The British District Commissioner, George Wood ford stamped out headhunting by force in 1900.
On the southwestern side of the 150 km lagoon is the southeastern portion of New Georgia Island as well as the Vangunu Island. To its south is the Gatokae Island.
