Kolombangara, New Georgia Island




Kolombangara, New Georgia Island is an island among the group of Solomon Islands which is heavily forested but very scantily populated. Kolombangara, New Geoprgia Island is a name that has been derived from a term of the local dialect that literally means Water Lord. It is an island that that has approximately 80 rivers and flowing streams that run down the several flanks of the island.

Kolombangara in New Georgia Island is a beautiful and historical island that is circular in shape and has a strato volcano at Mount Veve and has an elevation of 1770 meters above the ground. This is a lovely island that also forms the southern boundary of the New Georgia Sound. To the north western part of the Kolmbngara is the Vella Gulf that separates the island from Vella Lavella and Gizo. It lies to the south east of the Kula Gulf in New Georgia.

One of the finest attractions of the group of Island in Georgia Island, Kolombangara of Solomon Island, is visited by national and international travelers to explore the rich forest wealth. During the Kolombangara tour, travelers get some fine opportunities to witness the flora and fauna of the region. Kolombangara of New Georgia Island is of great historical significance. It was during the Second World War, that the Japanese under General Noboru Sasaki had set up several military units on a flat strip of land at Vila. This strip was used by the Japanese as an air-strip as a step to establish a defense line through the central of Solomon Island. In May 1943, island and the waters around the island was the scene of some fierce naval action. It was during this that a mission to intercept the Tokyo Express supply resulted in the collision and rescue of John F. Kennedy and his crew in the PT-109 by the scouts of Solomon Islander. After the success of the Japanese to sink the supply liner of the American troops that the US woke up and within 3 days managed to enter Kolombangara and subsequently take control of the land between September 23rd and October 4th, 1943. The Japanese were driven out.

Kolombangara is an important place for sightseeing in New Georgia Island. While undertaking a tour of the island one can also move to the southwest and visit the popular Ghizo Island. Various excursion tours can also be undertaken from Kolomangara to the neighboring group of islands that can be a highly entertaining one.
