New Year in Iran



New Year in Iran is celebrated with great pomp and show. Nowruz is the traditional Iranian New Year. This is celebrated in Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Northern Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Georgia, Albania and many other countries of central Asia like Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Nowruz is the first day of the spring season and it is also celebrated as the beginning of the New Year in Iran. It is also the start of the Bahá'í year. This event is mainly celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox. This generally occurs on the 21st of March. At times it is on the previous or the next day and this depends on when it is observed.

The New Year in Iran that is Nowruz has been celebrated for more than 3000 years and the ritual is still continuing. The customs and the rituals of this celebration are deeply rooted in the tradition of the Zoroastrian religion. At present the event is celebrated in many of the countries which were previously territories and had some Persian influences. The event has got different names in different parts of the world. In the country of Turkey, it is called Nevruz and Newroz in Kurdish and Sultan Nevruz. At the time of this festival the whole country is beautifully decorated. All the old rituals and customs are followed while celebrating New Year in Iran. It is still a very common belief of the people that whatever they do at the time of year will affect their entire year. Another tradition which is followed at some places during the New Year is that some sweet stuff like candy or honey is kept in a safe and placed outside the house, just the day before the New Year. Next day it is brought inside the house by the earliest riser of the house.
